This course will focus on three fundamental topics of public intervention: discrimination, family and retirement.Only two of these topics will be taught each year.
This year we shall focus on the effectiveness of anti-discrimination measures such as quota and affirmative action policies, knowing that discrimination may take different forms and it usually refers to situations in which equally productive persons are treated unequally because of observable characteristic such as gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, disability. This part of the course will be taught by Prof. Elena Stancanelli. The other part of the course will be taught by Prof. Benoit Rappoport and will look into economic theories of ageing and retirement and analyze different aspects of the relationship between ageing, economic structures and public intervention, especially in the context of an ageing society.
The exam for the discrimination-policy part of the course will last 2 or 3 hours and be structured as follows. You will be given a short paper and will be asked to comment on it. You will have to think of the economic model underlying this paper and relate it to the literature we have studied together. You will have to think of ways the paper could have been improved. Thus, provide at least 3 good reasons the paper deserved to be published while also listing at least 3 shortcomings of the paper.
The exam for the retirement policies part of the course will consist of reading a paper and presenting it to the class, with presentations being sceduled during the last lecture/s. Depending on the size of the class, presentations will be done individually, or by group.
