The course will cover a range of phenomena associated with counting and measuring across languages and domains, such as the following ones:

* Mereology:

  • axioms of mereology
  • mereology vs. plural logic
  • how many mereologies?
  • null individuals?

* Mass/count distinction and related distinctions across domains:

  • mass/count distinction in languages like English and French
  • mass/count distinction in other languages, such as Mandarin?
  • cognitive distinction between objects and substances
  • types of collective predicates (e.g. gather vs numerous)
  • telic/atelic distinction in the verbal domain
  • type-based analyses
  • strongest meaning hypothesis

* Dependent indefinites
* Dependent plurals
* Event semantics and pluractionality:

  • distributive concord
  • event internal vs. external pluractionals

Bibliography: the course will present works like those of Brasoveanu, Champollion, Chierchia, Henderson, Krifka, Kuhn, Link, Nicolas, Spector, Winter, Zweig.

  • 60%: take-home exercises
  • 40%: a short (maximum 10 pages) research paper or critical review of a research paper

Niveau requis :

Students should have already taken an introductory course in logic or in natural language semantics.
